Things that go Together by Grasshopper Apps

Things that go Together is an application that works on categorization.  There can be between 2 and 8 pictures presented.  The user is able to choose if they would like a different minimum or maximum number of pictures used at one time.   Once the minimum and maximum have been selected your child can match the pictures on the left hand side to the corresponding picture on the right hand side of the screen.  Beyond matching the pictures you and your child can talk about what other objects belong to the categories.  For example if there are two pictures of fruits, you could ask your child to tell you about other fruits.  You can discuss other attributes such as color, shape, size, and texture.   If there are new vocabulary words you and your child could look the word up in a dictionary and then discuss where you could find the word and how it might be used.  From there you can look up pictures on the internet and draw your own pictures, as well.

This interactive story book application can be used to facilitate language in a number of different ways.  The story has some interactive components, but these animations are not over whelming. First, the story is told in a sequential manner.  This is important because it provides a model of how to tell a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.  Not only can you work on sequencing, but you can also target prepositions such as: “in,” “on,” “under,” “before,” “above,” and “after.”  Bedtime vocabulary can also be targeted while using this app.  Parents can read this book to their children or have the iPad, iPhone, or iPod read it to the child.  Once your child has become familiar with the story you can have your child retell the story and relate the events to your child’s life.
